Christian Counseling Consortium

Christian Counseling Resources for Churches and others in ministry

About the Christian Counseling Consortium of S.J. (see below)

The Christian Counseling Consortium recognizes the stress currently being experienced by people around the world due to the COVID-19 crisis and economic problems that have occurred. (See also the Seeking Balance in a Pandemic article with Bible passages for your encouragement to your left.)  Most of us have responded by developing our expertise with counseling through a video format on our computers, called by many names (Telehealth, Teletherapy, Distance Counseling, Skype Therapy, etc.).  Research actually shows the benefits of these types of therapy for most problems.  Please check the list of counselors from the "Find a Counselor" tab on the left side of this page.

 Telehealth/Telepsychology/Teletherapy Research

In the journal, Psychological Services, multiple authors reviewed the literature on the benefits of telepsychology in the article Efficacy of synchronous telepsychology interventions for people with anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and adjustment disorder:  A rapid evidence assessment.  Their systematic search resulted in twenty-four high quality published studies which indicated consistent evidence for the beneficial effect of synchronous telephone and videoconferencing interventions.

What is the Christian Counseling Consortium of South Jersey?

The CCC of SJ is composed of Christian counselors, pastors, and lay people who come together to discuss contemporary issues of concern and provide mutual support to the church and Christian counseling communities.  The CCC offers Christ-centered training for professionals and others involved in Christian Counseling, mental health and spiritual formation. In 1998, Dr. Ron Newman established this group (along with some colleagues) to provide a forum for those interested in the Christian counseling ministry, including those in pastoral and lay ministries.  It is an open group with no fees, and new members are always welcome.  The location of our meeting varies, as we want to be inclusive of as many local churches and Christian counselors as possible.

Mission Statement of CCC

To encourage and support one another in our service to Jesus Christ through the ministry and/or vocation of Christian counseling, as well as to cooperate in serving the body of Christ and the community at large (Gal. 6:9-10).  This is done through prayer, fellowship, sharing resources, mutual case consultations, jointly sponsored training events, and other creative responses to community needs.

As Christian counselors, we are not in competition with one another.  Through our fellowship and increased familiarity with one another, we can be more effective in networking with each other to help those in need and can multiply our ability to help local pastors in various ways .  Participation in the CCC does not mean endorsement of one another’s approach to counseling or theological doctrines, as we welcome individuals with diverse perspectives and recognize that there are a variety of methods for helping people.

Disclaimer:

Association with the Christian Counseling Consortium does not mean endorsement of specific approaches, doctrines, individuals, or licensing credentials, and each participant takes responsibility for his or her own practice.

[Above is our original purpose and premise, from October 1998 meeting in Dr. Newman’s office.]
